Celebrations From Around the World
As we continue celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s explore how our Balanced Body friends from Central America honor this special time of year. Despite coming from different countries, the celebrations in Costa Rica and Honduras share a common spirit of cultural pride and festivity.
In Costa Rica, preparations for September 14th, Independence Day, begin well in advance. This date is deeply meaningful for Costa Ricans as they celebrate their national pride and historical legacy. The festivities start with a symbolic torch relay that travels through Central America, uniting the region in a shared commemoration of independence. “The torch’s journey symbolizes our collective spirit and unity,” explains Balanced Body Educator Carolina Mora.
As September 14th arrives, Costa Ricans immerse themselves in patriotic fervor. At 6 PM sharp, “the national anthem is sung with great respect,” says Carolina Mora Balanced Body Educator. This moment is more than a tradition; it’s a powerful expression of national pride. The atmosphere is filled with unity as people reflect on their country’s history and achievements.
The day is marked by lively parades featuring school bands, children in traditional costumes, and folk-dance performances. The streets come alive with color and music, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Costa Rica. Traditional foods are also a big part of the celebration. Costa Ricans enjoy dishes like gallo pinto (a savory mix of rice and beans), creamy rice pudding, and aromatic Costa Rican coffee. These foods not only delight the palate but also celebrate the country’s culinary traditions.
In Honduras, Independence Day is celebrated with equal enthusiasm. Our friend Ceci notes, “Honduran people are loud, and love to party.” The festivities include vibrant carnivals, spirited parties, and family gatherings. Hondurans indulge in traditional foods such as baleadas (thick tortillas filled with beans and cheese), pollo chuco (spicy fried chicken), and yuca con chicharron (cassava with crispy pork).
Parades and folkloric music are central to Honduran celebrations. The lively rhythms of punta music and traditional dances create a festive atmosphere that energizes the community. Diego, one of our friends, shares, “We love baleadas and pollo chuco. Our family also enjoys making yuca con chicharron, which is absolutely delicious.” The joy of dancing to folkloric music reflects the vibrant spirit of Honduran culture.
Both Costa Rican and Honduran celebrations during Hispanic Heritage Month highlight their rich cultural roots and shared values, celebrating their histories, identities, and community spirit.
