What did Pilates say to the CoreAlign
“You Complete Me!”

It’s a corny joke, I know, but there’s truth in it! Joseph Pilates developed equipment based on his clients’ needs and experiences, and if you know the CoreAlign, you might imagine it would have been one of his creations—if only he’d had more time. Instead, we have Jonathan Hoffman, a physical therapist and passionate movement expert, to thank for this brilliant invention. His intentions and methods align closely with those of Joseph Pilates. In a stroke of luck—or cosmic inevitability—Jonathan brought his creation to Balanced Body, home to pilates.com and a world-renowned Pilates education program. The rest, as they say, is history.

Now, CoreAlign is found in Pilates studios worldwide, empowering instructors and students alike. Yet, as I travel and teach, I still meet many in the Pilates community who are unfamiliar with CoreAlign or hesitant to bring it into their practice.

To these folks, I say: No need to fear! Pilates and CoreAlign belong together, and here’s why…

Pilates & CoreAlign: A Natural Pairing

Pilates holds a special place in the movement world. As instructors, we have the unique privilege of working with the whole human—simultaneously addressing strength, flexibility, and nervous system rebalancing. We don’t just target a knee that aches going downstairs; we examine how it functions within the entire system, ensuring harmony throughout the body.

Pilates means different things to different people, making it difficult to define in just a few words. For me, Pilates is mindful movement, functional movement, and whole-body movement. As instructors, we strive to do what’s best for our clients, seeing their movement experience as a playground for possibility.

If Pilates embodies all of this, then CoreAlign is:

  • The perfect complement.
  • The natural next step.
  • The missing link, connecting Pilates to life—real-life movement, or what we call Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

Whole-Body Movement & Rewiring

Pilates teaches us to train the body in motion rather than isolating individual muscles. CoreAlign takes this concept to the next level. The moment a person steps onto the CoreAlign, their whole body is called to attention. The equipment provides instant feedback, revealing imbalances and prompting self-correction in real-time.

This is where CoreAlign’s magic happens—it facilitates deep rewiring and relearning. When we move out of alignment, CoreAlign makes it immediately apparent. When we move toward better alignment, we feel the reward. This proprioceptive experience is invaluable, allowing instructors to guide clients with fewer verbal cues and more embodied revelations.

Seamless Integration with Pilates Principles

Pilates helps us breathe, find strength in our center, connect our limbs to our core, move with efficiency and flow, and release tension where effort isn’t needed. CoreAlign reinforces all of these principles in a tangible and deeply felt way—engaging the body, mind, and spirit all at once.

Joy Puleo describes the CoreAlign as another tool in her toolkit—just like the Reformer or Ladder Barrel—and emphasizes that “the more tools, the better.”

Joseph Pilates developed many apparatuses, each serving as a tool for movement professionals. CoreAlign is another essential tool that seamlessly fits into our Pilates universe. More than that, it allows us to evolve our practice into an upright position, bridging the gap between workshopping hip extension on the Reformer and taking a real step out of the studio.

CoreAlign challenges us to move from the ground up—just as the human body evolved to do. It puts us on our feet and invites us to find our most balanced, harmonious alignment. Simulating walking, running, and even crawling retrains neuromuscular pathways, leading to more natural and effortless movement.

A Natural Evolution for Pilates: Connecting to ADLs

Pilates aspires to improve how we move in daily life. CoreAlign brings this goal to fruition by putting us on our feet, allowing us to refine and optimize movement in real-time.

Pilates fosters nervous system regulation through breathwork and grounding. CoreAlign builds upon that foundation, inviting us to rise, stretch, twist, and walk with newfound awareness. It’s the perfect transition from Mat work to standing movement—and, ultimately, into the real world.

Pilates & CoreAlign: An Easy Cross-Over

Same language, same principles, same goals.

If you complete a CoreAlign training, you’ll learn a repertoire of exercises developed by Jonathan Hoffman. However, Balanced Body has thoughtfully integrated CoreAlign’s language with Pilates, making it feel like a natural extension of our existing practice. Just as we use props to enhance Pilates exercises, we can use CoreAlign as a **Pilates tool**—no need to take off our Pilates hat! In fact, keeping it on makes the experience even richer.

Jonathan Hoffman, CoreAlign’s inventor, has shared that he loves teaching Pilates instructors because they are uniquely equipped to look at the whole body—making the CoreAlign experience particularly intuitive for them.

How to Incorporate CoreAlign into Your Sessions

So, you’re interested in CoreAlign but wondering how to use it? Here are three simple ways to integrate it into your practice:

Option 1: Teach a traditional Pilates session and finish with CoreAlign to integrate the work into full-body movement.

Option 2: Begin with CoreAlign for proprioceptive activation, then transition to the Reformer or Chair for focused skill work.

Option 3: Conduct an entire workout on CoreAlign, incorporating breathwork, skill training, and full-body engagement.

Nancy Myers calls CoreAlign “the missing link.”

What is CoreAlign linking? It connects Pilates more directly to real-life movement. It’s not that Pilates is deficient—it’s that CoreAlign opens new ground for Pilates to evolve, move, and flourish. It deepens our toolkit, helping instructors address the whole human experience.

If it helps bring more joy and freedom to movement, it truly belongs in every Pilates studio.

Pilates instructors, if you haven’t already, it’s time to add CoreAlign to your toolkit and elevate your teaching!
