As a physical therapist and the creator of CoreAlign™, I’ve spent decades helping people move better and recover from pain, utilizing the natural healing power of full-body pain-free functional exercises. What I want to share with you today is not just another set of exercises, but a framework I call Strategic Exercises—a simple, clinically tested approach that I believe can transform the way you, as Pilates and CoreAlign instructors, support your clients.

We know the need is real. Nearly half of U.S. adults live with musculoskeletal pain, and over 1.7 billion people worldwide are affected. Pilates is already backed by strong evidence as an effective tool for managing pain, especially low back pain. But here’s where Strategic Exercises come in: they give you and your clients a precise, evidence-informed way to reduce movement-related pain quickly and consistently.

The Bingo Moment

Many of you have probably witnessed this: a client tries a movement, and suddenly their pain lessens or disappears. Their eyes widen, they smile, and they realize, “I can actually move without pain.” This is a Bingo moment, and it’s incredibly powerful.
That shift doesn’t happen by accident—it occurs when the right exercise aligns with the right target area, and it’s performed pain-free. This is where your skill as a movement professional shines. You guide the client toward harmony in their movement, and in that moment, their confidence in their own body begins to return.

The Strategic Exercise

In my clinic, I see around 20 clients a day, many with movement-related pain much like what you encounter in your studios. I don’t simply wait for a Bingo moment to appear. Together, my client and I actively search for it, test different movements, and when an exercise reliably produces that effect, it earns the title of a Strategic Exercise. From there, the Strategic Exercise becomes both the cornerstone and the steering wheel of the rehabilitation journey.

Here’s why the strategic exercise, when found, is so effective:

  • Clients experience immediate progress, sometimes after years of frustration.
  • They learn a simple, portable tool they can use anywhere.
  • Unlike medication, the more they use it, the more effective it becomes—until eventually, they no longer need it.

Six CoreAlign exercises have emerged as especially powerful in this category.

Two stand out:

  1. The Lower Body Strategic Exercise, targeting movement-based disorders in the low back, pelvis, hips, thighs knees, legs, calves, ankles and feet areas.

  1. The Upper Body Strategic Exercise, targeting movement-based disorders in the neck, scapulae, shoulders, arms, elbows, forearms, wrists and hands areas.

Practical Integration

In your studio, start by testing these exercises with clients who report discomfort. Use CoreAlign if you have it, or teach the no-equipment version directly. After one correct repetition, confirm three things:

  1. The exercise was harmonious and pain-free.
  2. The stretch felt like a comfortable deep glide.
  3. Symptoms improved immediately.
When successful, send them home with the no-equipment version. Encourage them to use it early and often, at the first sign of discomfort. With consistent practice, these small moments of relief grow into longer periods of freedom—and eventually, together with their regular studio sessions, lasting healing.
