The landscape of university wellness has taken a remarkable turn. The University of Nottingham has established itself as a trailblazer in higher education by launching the UK’s first dedicated Reformer Pilates studio at the David Ross Sports Village. This groundbreaking initiative signals a new era in which academic institutions recognize movement as fundamental to student and staff wellbeing.
The decision wasn’t made lightly. University leadership identified an opportunity to deliver something genuinely transformative: a space that would elevate their already impressive sports and wellness offerings while setting a benchmark others would aspire to reach.
A Vision That Bridges Performance and Recovery
Caroline Martin, Group Exercise Manager at the University of Nottingham, explains their vision:
“Our vision was to create a facility that bridges performance, rehabilitation, and wellbeing. We identified a gap in our offer and saw an opportunity to deliver something genuinely sector-leading, a studio that supports students, staff, athletes, and the wider community. Reformer Pilates perfectly complements our physiotherapy services, athlete development programmes, and sports injury clinic, reinforcing our holistic approach to performance and recovery.
We were also keen to create a unique space that elevated the holistic training experience, with a look and feel completely different, yet still connected to the rest of the sports facilities. Working with Balanced Body, we put a great deal of thought into the design, that includes bespoke flooring and a visually impressive wood panelling with living wall concept. We believe the whole studio, in both its purpose and design, is unique to the education sector and sets a benchmark for other universities to follow.”
The facility also plays a strategic role in the university’s inclusion and disability support initiatives. The adaptable nature of Reformer Pilates makes it accessible to individuals with varying abilities, ensuring that movement remains available to everyone regardless of their starting point.
State-of-the-Art Reformer Pilates Equipment
The studio houses an impressive collection of equipment that reflects the university’s commitment to excellence. Eleven Balanced Body Allegro 2 Reformers with Towers and Plank Bars form the centerpiece, complemented by five Combo Chairs. This configuration supports diverse programming, from large group sessions to specialized rehabilitation work.
Each Reformer represents precision engineering and thoughtful design. The equipment selection process involved extensive evaluation, with Balanced Body emerging as the clear choice for both quality and collaborative partnership potential.
Tom Sharratt, Health and Fitness Manager, reflects on the selection process:
“Balanced Body stood out immediately. The equipment is exceptionally well designed, durable, versatile, and visually stunning, plus their team was fully collaborative from the start. They understood our goals and worked with us to bring our vision to life, from the studio’s layout and bespoke window frosting to the delivery of bespoke, on-site instructor training and future education planning.”
Partnership That Extends Beyond Equipment
Balanced Body’s involvement extended far beyond equipment installation. Our team’s comprehensive support included studio design consultation, instructor training, and course development, ensuring the facility would be sustainable and future-ready from launch.
The partnership included specialized training programs delivered on-site by expert educators. The Group Exercise team completed the Group Reformer for Fitness Professionals program, led by Balanced Body Educator Zoe Watson. The physiotherapy team also completed tailored PT/rehab training with internationally respected Balanced Body Educator Lindy Royer, PT, equipping clinicians to integrate evidence-based Pilates exercise into treatment plans alongside manual therapy. Through Balanced Body’s extensive therapeutic movement education, physiotherapists can better support orthopaedic and neurological patients with programming that complements hands-on care.
Zoe continues mentoring the Group Exercise team as they refine their skills through a carefully planned program launch scheduled for early 2026. The physiotherapy team has already begun integrating Pilates principles into athlete care and rehabilitation pathways, embedding equipment-based practices across both performance and clinical services.
Education That Builds Long-Term Success
The Reformer Pilates benefits extend well beyond the physical aspects of movement. The comprehensive education support has created genuine excitement across the university’s wellness teams.
“The education support we’ve received from Balanced Body has been exceptional,” Martin notes. “Zoe’s guidance has given our instructors real confidence, and Lindy’s work with our physiotherapists has inspired new ways of approaching rehabilitation and performance. The training has elevated what we’re capable of delivering, and it’s created real excitement across the team. It’s given us the foundations we need for long-term success, and we’re looking forward to building on it as we work towards becoming an official Balanced Body training centre.”
Integration and Early Success
Since launching, studio sessions have been seamlessly integrated into the university’s Group Exercise program through a dedicated booking platform and pricing structure. Classes accommodate all experience levels, from newcomers to advanced practitioners, complemented by individual sessions through the sports injury clinic and physiotherapy teams.
Early engagement data reveal overwhelmingly positive responses, with particularly strong participation among both younger students and older adults. This broad appeal validates the university’s vision of creating truly inclusive movement opportunities.
Students and community members can now access this world-class facility right on campus and integrate it into their daily routines.
Looking Toward the Future
The university’s ambitions extend well beyond the current facility. Phase Two plans explore partnerships with professional sports teams, corporate wellness programs, and local NHS partners. Additional development includes short courses and workshops designed to engage broader audiences.
“Our ambition is to make Reformer Pilates a cornerstone of our health and wellbeing ecosystem,” Caroline adds. “It’s accessible, effective, and offers something for everyone, whether recovering from injury, enhancing athletic performance, or simply looking to move better.”
Ken Endelman, Founder and CEO of Balanced Body, recognizes the significance of this partnership:
“From the moment we engaged with the University of Nottingham team, it was clear this project was about more than equipment; it was about creating a model of best practice for University wellbeing. It’s been fantastic to work with such a forward-thinking institution and to see Reformer Pilates being embraced as both a performance and therapeutic tool. The enthusiasm across campus has been fantastic. We very much look forward to partnering with the University further moving forward.”
Setting New Standards
By introducing this purpose-built studio and partnering with Balanced Body, the University of Nottingham has established more than just another fitness facility. They’ve created a model of best practice that demonstrates how higher education institutions can innovate in student and staff wellness.
The facility represents a new standard, recognizing that supporting physical wellness requires the same level of investment and expertise as academic programs. Other institutions now have a blueprint for elevating their own wellness offerings while creating sustainable, income-generating programs.
The Reformer Pilates studio at Nottingham stands as proof that when universities commit to innovation in wellness, the results benefit everyone: students, staff, athletes, and the broader community they serve.
Balanced Body thoroughly believes that movement can change people’s lives. We are the leading resource for Pilates and mindful movement equipment, information and education for fitness centers, studios, rehabilitation facilities and home enthusiasts.
