Music evokes emotions that can significantly enhance both enjoyment and physical performance. Numerous studies have shown that syncing movement with music not only improves athletic output but also helps individuals sustain their performance over time. Both participants and observers consistently report higher enjoyment levels when movement is well-coordinated with music.
In 2007, USA Track & Field—the national governing body for distance running—banned the use of headphones and portable audio devices during official races. The rule was implemented “to ensure safety and to prevent runners from having a competitive edge.” This decision highlights the widely acknowledged fact that music can enhance athletic performance.
Dr. Costas Karageorghis, a world-renowned researcher in the field and author of over 100 studies, describes music as “a type of legal performance-enhancing drug.” Music doesn’t just support better performance; it also improves how athletes experience their training and results. AND, we can also use it as a part of Pilates. Read on as we share tips on HOW music improves performance.

How Does Music Improve Performance?
- Dissociation from Fatigue
Music helps distract the mind from the physical sensations of fatigue and discomfort. Research has consistently shown that music can delay the onset of tiredness and reduce the perception of effort, especially during endurance activities like running, cycling, or rowing. - Promotion of Flow States
Music can facilitate a state of “flow,” a psychological condition characterized by deep focus and a sense of effortless action. Athletes often describe this as being “in the zone,” where their performance feels automatic and efficient. Music helps trigger this mindset, enhancing internal motivation. - Synchronization of Movement and Rhythm
Matching music to repetitive movements has been shown to increase work output and efficiency. The rhythm of music helps structure movement patterns, which can improve coordination, stamina, and overall performance. This is especially evident in sports and workouts involving repeated actions like running or weightlifting. - Emotional Engagement and Enjoyment
Music evokes strong emotions and can trigger positive memories, enhancing the overall enjoyment of physical activity. These emotional boosts can increase motivation, reduce feelings of boredom, and help athletes push through difficult training sessions with more enthusiasm.
